What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also called radiofrequency neurotomy, uses heat generated by radio waves to temporarily disable pain-transmitting nerves. By disrupting the nerve's ability to send pain signals to your brain, RFA provides significant and lasting pain relief.

How It Works

During the procedure, a specialized needle is precisely positioned near the targeted nerve using fluoroscopic guidance. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered through the needle, creating a controlled heat lesion that interrupts pain signal transmission. The treated nerves can regenerate over time, but pain relief typically lasts 6–12 months or longer.

The Procedure Experience

Radiofrequency ablation is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia with light sedation if desired. The treatment itself takes approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the number of nerves being treated. Most patients return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days.

Expected Outcomes

While some patients experience immediate relief, it typically takes 1–3 weeks for the full benefits to develop as inflammation subsides. Many patients enjoy significant pain reduction lasting six months to over a year, and the procedure can be repeated when pain returns.
